Activities

Seismic risk evaluation for urban regions, buildings and structures:

  • Evaluation of the parameters of expected seismic impacts;
  • Identification of the dynamic characteristics of Buildings, Engineering structures and Monuments of culture (BEM) through field testing and observation of their instrumentally recorded response, followed by processing and analysis of the acquired data;
  • Numerical analyses of the dynamic response of soil strata and BEM;
  • Analysis of the response of soil-structure-equipment systems to dynamic inputs;
  • Probability safety analysis of critical structures.

Continuous monitoring of Strong Ground Motions (SGM):

  • Management/development of the National System for Registration, Analysis and Evaluation of Strong Ground Motions;
  • Improvement of the methods for processing and analysis of recorded data;
  • Maintenance/upgrading of the integrated data bank of recorded earthquakes at free field and in structures.

National Strong Ground Motion Network

Station with equipment for continuous seismic monitoring and recording of accelerations derived by seismic or anthropogenic actions

Mitigation of the destructive effect of earthquakes:

  • Observation, analysis and evaluation of the damages and destructions caused by earthquakes;
  • Investigation and assessment of the seismic resistance/vulnerability of all type of structures;
  • Ecological protection through seismic safety of NPP, Thermal Electric Power Plants, dams, chemical industry facilities, etc.;
  • Development/adaptation of earthquake resistant structural systems;
  • Mitigation of the seismic vulnerability of monuments of culture.

Development of Codes and Guidelines for design and construction in seismic regions:

  • Improvement of building codes;
  • Elaboration of guidelines/instructions for application of the standards in practice;
  • Harmonization of the Bulgarian Seismic Code with Eurocode-8;
  • Defining the National Parameters for practical application of EC-8 in Bulgaria.

  • Nuclear Power Plant Kozloduy and the site of Belene NPP;
  • Maritza Iztok Termal Power Plant;
  • Sofia Underground Rail and Sofia Airport;
  • The large dams of Chaira, Belmeken, Kardjali, Draginovo, Tzankov Kamak etc.;
  • The salt body of Provadia;
  • Monuments of national and world cultural heritage (the Rila Monastery, the church St. Sophia, the Antique Theatre in Plovdiv, the Tombul Mosque, renaissance houses, etc.).
