Structure

The structure of the Department is determined by the themes of the main scientific and applied investigations which are as follows:

  • Monitoring and analysis of the seismicity in Bulgaria and neighboring lands;
  • Macroseismic classification of the earthquake consequences;
  • Seismic zoning of Bulgaria.
  • Physics of seismic waves and earthquake sources;
  • Earth's crust and upper mantle structure in tectonically active regions;
  • Some aspects of earthquake prediction, etc.

The research activities on the themes mentioned above are performed by highly qualified researchers (11), specialists (17) and technicians (26), working at the Geophysical Institute in Sofia as well as at seismic stations of the modern National Seismological Network (NSN).

The NSN consists of fourteen stations and 3 local networks spread over the territory of the country and the data center situated in Sofia. This network is the unique system in Bulgaria serving for real time determination of the earthquake parameters. The seismological information is transmitted in due time to the Council of Ministers, the Ministry of State Policy and directory ”Civil Protection”, as well as to the mass media and other organizations. As it was mentioned above after 2005 the NSN was modernized and switched from analogue, short period one component recording to 3-component, broad-band on-site digital recording, automatic processing and digital data analyses. The new observational system corresponds to the highest European standards in earthquake monitoring and data processing and fulfills the requirements of the National authorities and society. The earthquake monitoring in Bulgaria ensures the necessary base for permanent investigations of space, time and energy distribution of seismicity, the deep Earth’s structure and the stress field in the earth crust and leads to better understanding of the earthquake genesis nature.
