Department Geodesy was functions as a specialized scientific center on geodesy and surveying. It is a basic unit in the group of institutes of BAS having as an object of investigation the Earth as a planet and its physical fields, in particular, complex study and expert activities in the area of geodesy on the territory of the country.
The scientists of Department Geodesy perform scientific investigations in the field of space geodesy, geodetic astronomy, physical and mathematical geodesy, estimation theory and statistics, global, regional and local geodynamics. Department Geodesy participates in the international cooperation for studying the Earth as a planet, its orientation in space and its gravity field. Integrating the results from geodetic data with the results from other Earth sciences, the scientists of Department Geodesy carry out interdisciplinary investigations in the area of tectonics, seismology, deformations of lithosphere on global, regional and local scale.
The basic scientific priorities of Department Geodesy are:
The scientific research carried out in the Department Geodesy has fundamental and applied character and at the same time is directed to solving priority national tasks.
In accordance with Act No 1 of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Bulgaria No 6/18.01.2005 for the distribution of the tasks on geodesy and cartography of national importance, it is imposed on BAS, via the Department Geodesy, to:
The scientific-research, scientific-applied and experimental works for ensuring the performance of the tasks related to geodesy and cartography of national importance are carried out by the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences – the Department Geodesy and the University of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Geodesy – the Faculty of Geodesy, in collaboration with the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works.
The Plana Geodetic Observatory (GO), at a distance of about 30 km from Sofia , is in operational since 1983 . The observatory is equipped with unique space and astro-geodetic instruments. Seismic and accelerometric stations were installed in 2003/2004 . The installation of an ionosphere station is in progress. In this way the Plana GO has been transformed into an experimental scientific center of Earth sciences.
A specialized scientific-technical library with more than 10 000 titles has been organized and functions in Department Geodesy.
The scientific research staff of Department Geodesy is 13 people: 3 professors, 3 associate professors and 7 research associates, of them – 3 with the D.Sc. and 5 with the PhD degree.
INSTRUMENTS AND EQUIPMENT
Department Geodesy has on its disposal modern technical equipment:
One of the main priority of Department Geodesy in the establishment and realization of the international scientific cooperation is the development of joint projects with leading foreign institutions and institutes, which are conformable to the national needs and modern trends in the development of geodesy and surveying. The developed in the laboratory projects are financially supported by foreign institutions as: the European Community, the V Framework Program – Specific investigations and development of technologies “Energy, Environment and Sustainable Development”, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA, the Royal Observatory of Belgium, Department of Seismology, Brussels, Belgium.
Joint projects are developed with the Astronomical Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences (CAN), Prague, Czech Republic; the National Scientific Research Center, Department of Seismology, Paris, France; the Institute on Time and Space Metrology – Russian Scientific Research Center on Physical, Technical and Radio-technical Measurements” of the Russian Federation, Moscow.
The program for education of post-graduate students occupies an important place in the education activities of Department Geodesy. At present there are five PhD students in the Department. Specialists of Department Geodesy are leaders and consultants of diploma theses of students from the Faculty of Geodesy of the University of Architecture , Civil Engineering and Geodesy, Sofia , and participate actively in the education process.
Scientists from Department Geodesy are co-authors of the annual issues of the “Astronomical Almanac” of the NATURELA Publishing House, Sofia and the “Catalogue with Coordinates of the Earth and the Sun, Apparent Places of the Polar Star and Stars”, Issued by UACEG.
